Today is March 8th. Today marks the 100th anniversary of International Women’s day. This day could go off as a historic day in the annals of Indian democracy if all goes well. The controversial Women’s reservation bill which would facilitate a earmarked reservation of 33 percent for women in the legislative bodies is going to be tabled in the parliament for approval today and odds on it getting passed into a law look good.
The principal protagonists of the bill, The Congress and the BJP are vouching for the bill to be passed and a the Yadav trio of Hindi hinterland, Mulayam, Laloo and Sharad are opposing this bill in its present form. But with 2/3rds majority is needed to pass the bill from the Upper house and it seems that the BJP, for a change, is supporting the Government in its efforts to pass the bill safely.
The opposition to the bill is baseless as women have traditionally been relegated as second rate citizens of the any party and this bill would change everything as political parties which are traditionally male dominated ought to scout for suitable women to spearhead their cause.
Hope the bill would find a safe passage in the parliament and empower women for an entry into the legislative bodies and work for the upliftment of womenfolk.
Welcome to the new age of WOMEN beginning this WOMEN”S DAY,
